Piriform Ltd. Software - CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, and more...

We have been using CCleaner for a while, and it's proven to be very effective and well designed free tool for cleaning up and maintaining neglected and overused Microsoft Windows computers.

Defraggler is another free utility by Piriform Ltd. designed to defrag and optimize computer hard drives and individual files. Just how effective Defraggler is? Well, lets take a look....

First, we ran Microsoft native built-in Windows disk defragmenter on our old server a few times to see how effective it is... Picture we get is not pretty - our hard drive is still badly fragmented...

Note there is over 16% of free space available on the drive to insure successful defragmentation (Microsoft recommends to have at least 15% of free hard drive space available before running it's built in disk defragmenter).  It's Defraggler turn to do it's thing on our server's hard drive...

Now, lets take a look at our hard drive after Defraggler is done with it... We use Microsoft point of view - it's own disk defragmenter natively built into Microsoft operating system...
 

This may not be completely obvious from the picture above but final drive fragmentation number went down from 30% to around 3% after Defraggler finished it's job...
